Baptist Church
Organized, 1890

The First Baptist Church of Farnam was organized September 25, 1890, it was organized with nine Charter Members, two who are still with us.
The first meeting was held September 25, 1890. A council being called by the Baptist Breathern of Farnam, met on the above date at 8 o'clock p.m. The Council consisted of Rev. E. T. Stinnette, Rev. W. M. Evans and Rev. J. Palmer.
Mr. Stinnette was chosen moderator and Brother Evens, Clerk.
Churches represented by the above council were Pleasant Ridge and Pleasant Valley.
Articles of Faith and Church Covenant were publicly read, after reading of Scripture, prayer being offered and sermon delivered by Rev. E. T. Stinnette.
As a result of the meeting a church was organized consisting of nine members and recognized by the council as the First Baptist Church of Farnam.
On September 26, 1890 the church met for business and adopted the following:
1st That we adopt Penelton's Articles
of Faith and Church Covenant.
2nd That we receive members into the
church by unanimous vote, exclude
by majority.
3rd That Miss Minnie Brown be church
clerk.
On October 10, 1890 the following officers were elected:
Mr. A. E. Hill _______________ Deacon
Mr. J. Whitney ____________ Treasurer
Other business was transacted as follows:
1st That we make application to the
Missionary Board for help to
support a pastor.
2nd That we call a pastor.
3rd That Brother Hill and Wood confer
with Rev. Wm. Evens with a view
to his becoming our pastor.
4th Brother Evens was chosen our
pastor for one year.
5th That we have a meeting one
sabbath in each month.
6th That we pledge ourselves to raise
$100.00 for this field.
On December 19, 1890 business was transacted as follows:
1st That we take a collection on the
first sabbath of every quarter. The
proceeds to go toward Missionary
work.
2nd That the collections be given as
follows:
First Quarter's collection to
Home Mission Board.
Second Quarter's collection to
State Board.
Third Quarter's collection to
Baptist Pub. Society.
Fourth Quarter's collection to
Foreign Missions.
In 1891 our receipts for the first year were: First, $2.25; Second, $1.50; Third, $1.00; Fourth, $1.85; Total $6.60, which was paid to Mission Enterprises.
On December 24, 1892 a meeting was held. That there be a meeting held each sabbath for the purpose of prayers and bible study. That an effort be made to secure a pastor who can be with us once a month.
After the first year the following persons were to be received into the church by Baptism: Miss Grace Wood, Mr. Carlson, Mr. John Pollard, Mrs. John Pollard.
On April 23, 1895 the following business was transacted:
1st That we hold a religious meeting
as often as every other sabbath.
2nd That Miss Ella Kerr was received
into the church and given the right
hand of fellowship by Brother
Tyson.
On December 22, 1895 after the evening service it was voted that we receive Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Dillon into the church after Baptism. Mr. Herbert N. Stilley was chosen church clerk.
On December 21, 1896 a meeting of the church was called at 8 p.m. by the Pastor D. L. McBride. Mr. McBride was a circuit minister at that time, by the way he was an old soldier, of the Civil War and I think his widow is still living at McCook. At this meeting the Articles of Incorporation were read and admitted to the church. It was moved and carried that they be adopted as read. At that time we were putting on a building program and we agreed to ask a donation of $150.00 from the church edifice fund of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. The church was built in 1896.
Some years after the organization and the time of dedication of the church the people from Antelope Church and the people from Pleasant Ridge at Moorefield organized and then we called a regular pastor to divide his time with our church and the Antelope Church. Rev. C. J. Johnson and after that a young man who came from the Seminary, Rev. Thomas Kimball, the first pastor that was ordained in church or meeting at that time by Brother Finlay, Dea Lincoln, Rev. Stinnette, and Rev. Hill of this church and then about 1898 a revival meeting was conducted by Rev. Thomas Kimball and the church received members for baptism, Laura Moore, Mrs. Griffith, Mrs. Gregory and Mrs. Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Herndon by letter.
That covers about the early part of the History of the Baptist Church and the pastors that we have had are: Rev. W. M. Evans, Rev. C. J. Johnson, Rev. D. L. McBridge, Rev. Thomas Kimball, Rev. Conners, Rev. Hill, Rev. Erwin, Rev. Starring, Rev. Baker, Rev. Fields, Rev. Owings, Rev. Crabtree, Rev. Barton.
