Darryl J. Hosick

Darryl J. Hosick, 86, of Stockville passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Darryl was born on October 28, 1939 to Woodrow and Helen (McLaughlin) Hosick in Curtis. Growing up in Curtis, he attended Curtis Elementary School and graduated from UNSA in Curtis in 1957.

In 1962, Darryl met the love of his life, Freda Sass. They were married on June 2, 1963 in McCook, NE after Darryl completed his basic training with the U.S. Army at Fort Ord, CA. They lived in Lawton, OK where he was stationed at Fort Sill. Then he was deployed to Germany and Freda later joined him there. This is where he served the rest of his military service. He was honorably discharged in March of 1965. They returned back home to Nebraska where he worked on the Mervin Zysset farm for 8 years. In 1969, they purchased the Ed and Dora Weiss farm east of Stockville. He then began farming their own land and building a cattle herd. In 1973, he joined his brothers, Bob and Les, in the drywall business. Darryl had many other additional jobs throughout the years including custom baling, Maywood bus driver and bus maintenance, Medicine Valley bus driver, maintenance at NCTA and rural mail carrier.

Darryl was known for his many interests and talents. Hunting for artifacts with his brother Les and other family members was a hobby he enjoyed. He also greatly enjoyed hunting and target practice. Darryl served on the Frontier County Fair Board and was a member of the Carl Heath American Legion Post 95 for many years. He dedicated countless hours to supporting his community and helping preserve traditions that meant so much to him. Dale Hinton and Darryl organized the first demolition derbies in Frontier County. Darryl was an avid driver in Curtis and Stockville. He rarely missed the excitement and camaraderie they brought. Later in life, Darryl enjoyed leather work.

Darryl loved Husker athletics. He also had a deep appreciation for classic cars and was a huge fan of Dale Earnhardt. Whether it was race day, game day, or a local community event, Darryl enjoyed sharing those moments with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time in his man cave where he had his John Deere (Hosick Implement) memorabilia, Native American artifacts, NASCAR, and other keepsakes displayed.

Faith was a very important part of his life. He attended both the Curtis Berean Church and the Stockville Congregational Church, where he faithfully served others over the years. He spent time as a Sunday school teacher and an Awana leader, helping guide and encourage young people with kindness, patience, and wisdom.

He also devoted many years to coaching the Stockville baseball teams and took part in the TeamMates program, leaving a lasting impact on the young athletes and students he mentored. Darryl believed in hard work, teamwork, and encouraging others to do their best both on and off the field. Above all else, Darryl loved his family. He and Freda enjoyed traveling. They especially enjoyed their trips to Israel, Nashville and Branson. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their activities, sporting events, and milestones. He especially enjoyed traveling to Clint’s Hastings College football games.
