OBITUARY
Miss Lydia Hortense Abbott was born at Monmouth, Ill., July 2, 1832, and died at Bridgeport, June 13, 1918 aged 85 years, 11 months, and 11 days. She was married to Mr. W. B. Whitman in 1866 at Monmouth, Ill. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, three sons and four daughters, numerous grandchildren and a host of friends. The three sons are Edgar Whitman of Morrill, Wyoming, Mark W. and Guy F. of Bridgeport. The four daughters are Mrs. Eva Miles of Sidney, Mrs. Brenen and Mrs. Grace Hanawald of Bridgeport and Mrs. Elsie Smith of Elwood, Nebraska.
Mrs. Whitman came to Morrill county with her husband in 1896 and has lived three miles west of Bridgeport since that time until her death.
She was a real mother, patient in sickness and much beloved by all who knew her. She has been rather feeble for the past year since she had a stroke of paralysis. Her last illness which resulted in her death was due principally to old age.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15th. The services were in charge of the Women’s club of Bridgeport of which Mrs. Whitman was an honorary member. The ladies acted as pall-bearers and also had charge of all the music. The sermon was preached by Rev. McDougall at the Presbyterian church after which a very impressive grave service was held, the ladies taking part by marching about the open grave and depositing on the casket sprigs of green. The remains were laid to rest in Forest Lawn cemetery. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved.
