Marvin R. Klooz

McCOOK, Neb. — Marvin R. Klooz, age 89, of McCook, passed away at his home near McCook on Dec. 28, 2021.

Marvin was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Farnam, Neb., to parents, Harvey and Elizabeth (Rice) Klooz. He was one of five siblings who attended school in Farnam, graduating from Farnam High School with the Class of 1950. Shortly after graduation, Marvin was stricken with polio, that took him almost two years to recover, before he was finally able to further his education. In 1956, Marvin graduated from the University of Nebraska with a bachelor ’s degree in business administration.

Marvin married Ruthann (Lennemann) Klooz at St. Patrick ’s Catholic Church in McCook on July 21, 1956, and to this union two daughters were born. Marvin worked for an insurance company as a regional representative and was able to travel regularly, servicing several states until finally changing career paths in 1968. In that year, he and Ruthann purchased his family farm south of Farnam, making it a third generation property. During that time, they made their home in the McCook area until finally moving to Ruthann ’s family farm in 1974 and living out the remainder of their years.

Marvin ’s love of farming and agricultural science yielded several new endeavors throughout his life, including a 15-acre orchard and garden that the couple planted in their early 50 ’s. They kept bees and harvested local honey, ran a three-acre asparagus patch and sold an enormous variety of fruits and vegetables at their Klooz Farm Market, which became a regional icon for fresh produce over the years.

He enjoyed supporting his daughters and their athletic endeavors and was just as supportive toward his grandchildren ’s pursuits. He enjoyed talking with friends and strangers alike about gardening, teaching and giving advice when he could. He was a generous and unshakable figure to many who knew him. His resilience and overall joy of life was always an inspiration to his family and friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruthann Klooz; a daughter, Kathy Matson; one brother, Clark Klooz; and two sisters, Dorothy Hansen and Evelyn Arnold.

Marvin is survived by his daughter, Dr. Karen Hunter of McCook, Neb.; son-in-law, Gary Matson of Denver, Colo.; sister, Eva Reichelderfer of Mineral Wells, Texas; grandchildren, Logan Hunter (Hannah) of Little Rock, Ark., Austin Hunter (Jordan) of Trenton, Neb., Valerie Loghry of Trenton, and Julia Matson, Denise Matson, David Matson and Sam Matson, all of Omaha. Also surviving are numerous great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patrick ’s Catholic Church, 409 East F St., McCook, NE 69001.

Recitation of the Rosary was 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, McCook.
