George Herman is Dead

George C. Herman, a prominent farmer and stock raiser, living four miles east of Stockville, died early Saturday morning after a three weeks illness, pneumonia and other lung troubles being the cause of his death.

He had been dangerously ill for several days but at one time had sufficiently recovered to enable him to leave his bed. He suffered a relapse, however, and his condition again became serious, but until a few hours previous to his passing away his death was unexpected and the sad event was a great shock to his relatives and friends.

Mr. Herman has been a resident of Frontier county since 1885, homesteading the place on which he died.

He was a progressive farmer and business man, a successful raiser of fine stock, and by hard work and fair and honest dealing with all with whom he came in contact he had acquired enough of this world’s goods to enable him to spend the balance of his life in ease and comfort.

Mr. Herman was in the lead in every movement that would help to better existing conditions and did not hesitate to give his time or money to any project that would lead to that end. His reputation for honesty and square dealing is well known to all, and Frontier county, his own neighborhood and Stockville in particular lose one of their best citizens by his death.

He was Senior Warden of the local Masonic lodge of which order he became a member in 1906. As in everything else Mr. Herman was one of the best Masons in the order and lived up to and abided by its teachings. The funeral services were in charge of the local Masonic lodge. Rev. Thomas Scott preached the funeral sermon at the Herman home Tuesday morning and his tributes to the life and character of the deceased express the sentiments of the entire community where he was known. Interment was made in the Arbor cemetery at Stockville.

George C. Herman was born in Hanover, Germany, on November 8, 1857. He moved with his parents to Alleghany county, New York, when he was eleven years of age. He came to Harlan county, Nebraska, in 1879 where he was united in marriage on February 2, 1880, to Flora E. Beeman. They moved to Frontier county in 1885, where they have ever since resided. Mr. Herman died December 23, 1911, at the age of fifty-four years, one month and fifteen days. Three sisters and a brother in New York state, his wife and two sons, William G. and Harrison H., survive him. The heart of the entire community goes out in sincere sympathy to the bereaved wife and sons, who lose a true and devoted husband and a kind and loving father.
