Obituary Collection
Cornelius Wood

In our items last week we mentioned the sickness of Grandpa Wood which commenced the first of the the week in a rather light form but rapidly grew worse in spite of all the medical skill that could be employed. Friday night death relieved his suffering. About six months ago his aged wife died and was layed to rest in the Moorefield cemetery, and now he has joined her to rest, by her side until the Judgment morn.

Cornelius Wood was born in Ohio October 8, 1829, thus being 81 years, 9 months and 6 days old. In 1839 he come with his parents to Indiana and was married July 25, 1854, to Elizabeth Gullion. In 1867 they moved to Davis county, Missouri, and there resided until 1903, when on account of age and ill health they came to Frontier county, Nebraska, to live with their children, Mrs. McLaughlin, Mrs. Mast and others. During their long period of life together, they were blessed with 14 children, 10 of whom are living. They were of the very substantial citizens of Davis county and by careful managing layed up considerable wealth. They were greatly respected by all. Although each one lived to a ripe old age, yet we know the children will greatly miss Father Wood as they have missed Mother Wood, and we extend sympathy in unstinted measure to the bereaved. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church here in Moorefield Sunday afternoon, conducted by Elder Skinner, after which he was tenderly laid to rest. Four of his children were present at the services besides a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of sympathizing neighbors and friends. The funeral services were as near a repetition of those held for Grandma Wood as was possible. Not so many of the children were here this time but they had visited him only a few months before when nearly all came to attend the funeral of their mother. It has been said that no one can measure the true value and love of parents until they have gone into the great beyond, never to be at our side again in this troublesome world.
