Mrs. Mary Reed, Former Resident Here Dies
Mrs. Mary Reed was laid to rest Friday afternon, in the Highland cemetery, near Bertrand. Funeral services were held at the church at 2:00 with the Rev. A. L. Wright in charge.
Mary Ann Land was born in Henry county, Iowa, April 28, 1859 and departed this life in Bertrand, Nebraska, October 7, 1936; age 77 years, 5 months and 9 days. She grew to womanhood in the Iowa home and on March 15, 1882, was united in marriage with J. W. Reed. To this union four children were born, on preceding her in death in infancy. In 1886 she with her family came to Nebraska, locating on a homestead ten miles southwest of Farnam. Here they went through the hardships, privations and general experiences of the pioneers. In 1918 they moved to Bertrand where she has made her home until the time of her death. Mr. Reed passed to his reward in 1927.
Mrs. Reed was baptized and joined the Methodist church in Iowa over 50 years ago and was true to faith until the end. She was loved and respected by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn her passing: three daughters, Mrs. A. G. Elander of Lincoln; Mrs. Euda Kestler of Lincoln and Mrs. Vernal Peterson of Bertrand. One son, Wallie Reed, of Springfield, Nebr., ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Booth of Seattle, Wash., and one brother, Alvin Land of Watertown, S.D., and other relatives and many friends.
