Death of Fred Thomas

Fred Thomas, member of one of the pioneer families of Polk county, died at his farm home at Brady Island, Neb., at 6 a.m. today, according to a message received by his old-time neighbor, Otto Kummer, from his brother, Frank Thomas today. Frank, who resides in Polk county, was summoned there a week ago on account of Fred’s serious condition. The body will be brought to Columbus tomorrow, but arrangements for the funeral will not be made until the members of the family reach here. Mr. Thomas was about 65 years old. He came to Nebraska with his parents from South Bend, Ind., in 1871, the family homesteading in Polk county about six miles southwest of Columbus. There he lived until about 15 years ago, since which time he has farmed near Grant, Neb., and also in Butler counth south of Columbus and at Cedar Rapids, locating near Brady two years ago. He leaves a wife, five sons and two daughters, also four brothers and one sister. The brothers are Frank, of Polk county; Will, of Santa Monica, Cal.; Andy and Bert, of South Bend, Ind., and the sister is Mrs. Mossy, of South Bend. Mr. Thomas had been in failing health more than a year. His death was due to hardening of the arteries.
