Death of Fred Hecox
Another pioneer settler, a respected and loved citizen of Gothenburg, has passed to the great beyond, and left void a niche which cannot be filled. Fred Hecox died at his home in this city last Sunday. He suffered a stroke of paralysis a few years ago that rendered him almost helpless, and caused his family and friends much concern. Only a few weeks previous to his death he had been down town almost every day, and was a frequent caller at the Independent office, saying often that he like to sit in our big rocking chair, read the papers and talk to Charley. Fred was a real friend of the writer.
Frederick G. Hecox was born in Steuben county, New York, August 10, 1858, and died in Gothenburg, Nebraska, Sept. 28, 1924. In September, 1873, he came with his parents to Saline county, Nebraska, where they lived on a farm until in September, 1878, the family moved to Newark, Kearney county, Nebr.
On May 18th, 1882, he was married to Minie May Graves, at Newark, Nebr., and settled on a homestead south of Gothenburg, which was his home until October, 1922 when he removed to Gothenburg, residing here until his death.
To this union were born three sons and one daughter, all of whom survive him. They are Ralph and Albert of Gothenburg; Lula May and Rex A. of Cozad; who were at his bedside together with the mother when the end came. He also leaves to mourn his death two brothers, A. C. and D. W. Hecox of Kearney, Nebr., and one sister, Lany C. Cooper of Torrington, Wyo.
Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Arthur Soundy, and were largely attended. Interment was made in Peckham cemetery.
