Old Soldier Passes Away
Friday morning, April 24th, marked the passing of one more of our old soldiers. This time it was Sergeant Isaac Sexton who answered the final roll call. Mr. Sexton was at the time of his death living with his daughter, Mrs. John Baker, five miles east of Stockville, and was 69 years of age, having been born August 11, 1832, in Tennessee.
At an early age Mr. Sexton moved with his parents to Missouri, and in later years to Iowa, where at the age of 22 he married Miss Mahala Roe, who died in 1878. Of this union ten children were born, viz: Mrs. Wm. Elley, Mrs. John Baker and Frank Sexton, of Stockville, Nebr., Mrs. Elmer Tandy, Miss Mattie and Harvey Sexton, who reside near Quincy, Ill., John Sexton, whose present address is unknown, and three children who died in infancy. Mrs. Elley and Mrs. Baker were the only chilren in attendance at the funeral, Saturday, April 25. All were notified but were unable to come, with the exception of Frank, who is temporarily located at North Platte, and who arrived too late.
Mr. Sexton was sergeant of Co. E. 4th Regiment Reserve Corps, Chas. D. Lyon, Captain. He was enrolled for service of three years on August 1, 1861, and mustered out on the 6th of Sept. 1864, at Milwaukee, Wis., by reason of the expiration of term of service for which he enlisted. As far as we have been able to learn, Mr. Sexton participated in the battles of Inka, Corinth, Vicksburg, Miss., Jackson, Champion Hills and Farmington. He was a member of Heintzleman Post, G. A. R. No. 250, of this place.
The remains were interred in the Marlin cemetery.
