George Wiseman
George W. Wiseman was born at Waterloo, Ohio, November 28, 1841.
In early life he united with the Methodist church.
At the beginning of the Civil war he joined the 18th Ohio Infantry Company B, 7th Regiment, Volunteer Reserve Corps organized at Waterloo, Ohio. He was wounded by Wheeler’s cavalry while with his Company in Kentucky, August 8, 1863. Also a few days later suffered a sun stroke. He was discharged for disability after a service of four years in defense of our flag. While home on a furlough in April 1862 he was united in marriage by a Baptist minister, George Harrington, of Waterloo, Ohio, to Nancy C. McCartney.
To this marriage six children were born, Mrs. Julia B. Irwin of Franklin, Mrs. Nina A. Hatch of Cozad, John F. Wiseman of Humbolt, Saskatchewan, Canada, Josiah J. Wiseman of Consol, Iowa, Allen and Sammy dying in infancy.
He is survived by four children, twenty-one grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Nina Hatch and Mrs. Julia B. Irwin were the only children at the funeral.
Mr. Wiseman moved from Ohio to Vernon county, Wisconsin, in the spring of 1871, where he followed farming for eight years, then moved to Sioux county, Iowa, coming to Nebraska in the spring of 1884, living east of Elmcreek one year, then removing to Stockville on a homestead, where his companion departed this life March 4, 1891. Since that time he has made his home with his children and friends and for the past few years at the National Soldiers home at Hot Springs, South Dakota. He answered the final roll call January 20, 1920, at the home of his brother-in-law, J. D. McCartney, in Elmcreek.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church, Friday, January 23, at one thirty o&rsuo;clock, in charge of Rev. Whitman. Interment in the Elmcreek cemetery.
The pall bearers were veterans of the World war: Simon Laycock, Claude Dinkins, George Duerr, Tom Shannon, Frank DeMuth, Harold Barrett and Loran Abbott.
