M. C. Mitchell, Homesteader, Passes After Long Period Of Ill Health
Funeral services were held at his home at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, March 6 for M. C. Mitchell, whose death came on Sunday after a long period of ill health during which he had been most patient. The Rev. Vard V. Gray, pastor of the First Presbyterian church preached the funeral sermon, and Mrs. Roy B. Johnson sang. Burial was at the cemetery at Prairie Home.
Matthew Clark Mitchell was born April 17, 1854 on a farm near Delta, York County, Pennsylvania and departed this life in Holdrege, Nebraska March 2, 1930 at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 16 days. He was the oldest of eight children, all of whom preceded him in death.
Mr. Mitchell was united in marriage to Mary Bell Clark, September 14, 1876. Nine children were born to this union. One daughter, Ada Jane, and one son, George, preceded him in death.
Mr. Mitchell brought his family to Nebraska in 1886 and settled on a homestead southwest of Eustis. He moved to Eustis in 1908 and in 1910 moved to Holdrege where he has resided to the time of his death.
He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, Mary Bell Mitchell, six sons and one daughter, Joseph C., and William L. of Holdrege, Chauncey W., Gardner B., and Marion J. of Orafino, Charles W. of Holdrege, and Mrs. George G. Schweis of Reno, Nevada and five grandchildren.
