Last Civil War Vet At Springs San Dies
HOT SPRINGS, May 22.—Washington Whitman, 95, only civil war veteran at the veteran’s facility, died at 12:40 a.m., today at the facility hospital.
Funeral services will be at the facility chapel, but no date had been set this afternoon.
Mr. Whitman was born January 8, 1845, in Illinois. He enlisted August 4, 1862, and was discharged July 26, 1865, from Company E, 83rd Illinois infantry. He had lived for the past three years at the Evans hotel. His daughter, Mrs. M. P. Miles, has been with him. There are also several other members of the family, who have visited him here. Mr. Whitman and Mrs. Miles came to Hot Springs from Sidney, Neb.
The veteran was admitted May 11 to the hospital, when he became ill.
