Joseph Silas Haynes

Joseph Silas Haynes, ninth child of Samuel and Rebecca Haynes, was born on February 1, 1848, in Fairfield, Ohio. After living there a few years, he moved with his parents to Carroll County, Illinois, where he grew to manhood.

On September 10, 1873, he was united in marriage to Lydia Elizabeth Bashaw. To this union was born five sons, one of whom died in infancy. During the same year of his marriage, he left Illinois and went to Montgomery County, Iowa, where he lived until the spring of 1888, when he came to Eustis, Nebraska. In 1900 he moved to Gothenburg, where he resided until his death.

As the result of a fall in January, he has been bedfast with a broken hip during the past four months. Death came to him very peacefully Tuesday morning, May 7, 1935. At the time of death, his age was 87 years, 3 months and 6 days.

He is survived by his wife, four sons: Charles, Nelson, Ernest and Martin, twenty grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, all of whom live in Gothenburg, besides a great many distant relatives and friends. His nine brothers, five sisters, and three adopted sisters preceded him in death. He was a kind and loving husband and father. His kindly manner and friendly thoughtfulness endeared him to all who knew him.

Howard, Orville, Lloyd, Clyde, Darrell and Milan Haynes, six of his grandsons, were the pallbearers. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. Wm. Kilburn officiating. Interment was made in the Fairview cemetery.
