E. L. Howard
E. L. Howard was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Howard [who] came to Newbern, Iowa, in 1851. Mr. Howard was born April 27, 1856 and died June 8th, being 71 years, 1 month and 12 days old. He was born at Newbern, in Lucas county, Iowa, and spent most of his early life there.
He moved with his family to Nebraska in 1884, and remained there many years, being one of the early pioneers.
He lived in Lucas, Iowa, Lacona, Iowa, and later in Melcher, from which place he moved to Valley Junction with his daughter, Mrs. Nelle Goode, and her family. He suffered a paralytic stroke during his last years in Nebraska, and again after he came to Melcher, when little Frieda Goode died. He was genial and friendly, a lover of childrfen, who returned his affection.
In January of this year he united with the Highland Park Prebyterian church, receiving the Sacrament of the church. He made a good confession and the night before he died he expressed his faith and hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. he quietly and without struggle, fell asleep, looking forward to a reunion with his beloved dead.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Melcher, Thursday, June 9, at 1 p.m., conducted by Rev. Ellis. Interment in the Dallas cemetery.
