Sudden Death of Jacob A. Bailey
Springfield people were greatly surprised Saturday morning on coming down town to learn that J. A. Bailey had died a few hours previous at his home just south of town, as he had been in Springfield the night previous looking after some sick horses as he had been doing veterinary work for a number of years.
The funeral was held from the M. E. church at 2 p.m. Monday under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which deceased had been a member since 1901, Dr. J. B. Lichtenwallner, of Omaha, giving the ritualistic ceremony and Rev. V. R. Daniels preaching the funeral sermon. Burial was in the Springfield cemetery.
Jacob A. Bailey, son of Robert Rankin and Mary Catherine Bailey, was born at Frankfort, Ind., May 6, 1853, and departed this life December 8, 1928, age 75 years, 7 months and 3 days.
On March 28, 1878, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah Heater Thompson at Rippey, Green county, Iowa. To this union one son was born who died at the age of five years.
For a number of years deceased and wife lived in Frontier county, Nebr. and in 1893 moved to Springfield and engaged in the livery business, and later the veterinary calling and resided here till death came.
In 1893 deceased was converted and united with the U. B. church in Frontier county, and was a member of the Springfield M. E. church at time of death.
A wife and step-son, E. C. Thompson and hosts of friends who were drawn to him by his genial and pleasing personality during his long residence in this community, which was attested by the large number attending his burial.
