Phillip Elder
Phillip Henry Sheridan Elder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson Elder, was born Jan. 18, 1866, at Urbana, Ills. In September, 1872, the family took a homestead in Clay county, Nebraska. The father and mother, with their children, endured all the hardships common to pioneers. They experienced prairie fires, hail storms, drouth and Indians, such as all did who were brave enough to leave their homes for the far west.
In 1839, he was united in marriage to Anne Diamond. To this union was born a daughter, Lucy Ann. His wife died in 1900, and in 1906 he was united in marriage to Katherine Lissman. They resided at Clay Center for a time, later they moved to Ogallal, where he was engaged in ranching and farming. In 1924 he moved to Brady, where he has since resided.
His health had been in excellent condition until Friday, when he was suddenly taken ill, and departed this life Thursday, February 11, 1937, at ten o’clock p.m., in a hospital at Gothenburg, at the age of seventy-one years, twenty-three days.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and seven children: Mrs. Lucy Pounds of Circle, Mont.; Mrs. Elbia Black, of Brady; Mrs. Leon Aunspaugh, of Farnam; Margaret, Tom, George and Elmarie, of Brady. Two sisters: Ada Brittenham of Ruskin, and Fannie Voris of Clay Center, Nebraska, a brother, F. W. Elder, of Waterloo, Iowa, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at two o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Brady Methodist churchc, Rev. Williamson officiating.
The pallbearers were: Tom Bickley, Fred George, Jim Brittenham, Rauley Camblin, Larry Cunningham, Fulton Murphy. Interment was made in Gothenburg cemetery.—Brady Vindicator.
