Obituary
Herman Jurgen Nicklas Ihfe, son of Claus Ihfe and his wife, Magdalena nee Fohs, was born April 16, 1881 at Nindorf, Holstein, Germany. In his early infancy he became a member of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ when he was baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. After he was instructed in the Lutheran faith, he pledged his undying faithfulness to the Lord in His Church and was confirmed on March 15, 1896 at Meldorf.
As he was maturing into young manhood he took military training for two years and served in the Imperial Guard. After his years in the army, he went to Berlin, where he was employed until he left Germany.
It was in 1909 that the deceased together with his sister, Amanda (now Mrs. Henry Oelkers) emigrated to America. THey arrived in Fremont, Nebraska, on May 3 of that year. For a period of time he worked at Fremont, then he went to North Dakota, where he took a homestead near Williston. Later he sold his land and came back to Nebraska. He worked at Havelock till he went abroad on a visit to his old home in Germany. On this journey he met his future wife, Miss Dorothea Jasper. THey were united in marriage on April 12, 1921, by Pastor Petersen, at Meldorf, Germany. The heavenly Father blessed their marriage with two children, Claude (quite recently discharged from the army), and Junette (Mrs. Benjamin Clement), both living in Farnam. His family will cherish his memory as a faithful husband and faterh.
Following the return of Mr. and Mrs. Ihfe to America soon after their marriage, they farmed for some time near Fremont, and in [1922] came to the Eustis community. They made their home that year on the farm west of Eustis where they have lived and worked ever since. They soon established connections with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Eustis. He has been a voting member of this congregation since 1927. At the time of his death he was a member of the local mission committee of our congregation.
Mr. Ihfe had a strong constitution and worked hard on the farm till the last. About three years ago he was seriously ill when evidently gassed in a silo, and since then died not enjoy as good health as before. Moreover, God had given him reason to prepare for his final call, for two and a half weeks before his death he suffered with a severe circulatory disorder, but seemed to recover quickly from this acute illness. Last Sunday he was again present in our morning services, and the day of his death he had worked all day at home. Last Tuesday evening, Feb. 12, at the evening meal, he was suddenly stricken evidently with a spasm of the coronary artery, and died within a very short time, about 7 o’clock. His age was 64 years, 9 months, and 27 days.
His sudden death is mourned by his wife and children, by one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law; by two grandchildren; ty two brothers, David of Eustis and Henry in Germany; by two sisters, Amanda (Mrs. Oelkers) of Eustis and Adele in Germany; by his wife’s parents, thought to be still living in Germany; by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; besides many other relatives and friends.
May he rest in peace and the eternal Light shine upon him!
