Adelyn J. Hess
A Celebration of Life Service for Adelyn Hess will be held at Lakeside Fellowship Church in Alma, Nebraska on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Noon with Pastor Duane Russell officiating.
Adelyn Hess of York, Nebraska, formerly of Orleans and Alma, Nebraska, went to be with her Lord on December 24, 2015 at her home in York at the age of 79 years. Adelyn Jeanette Preitauer was born in her grandparent’s home, 2¼ miles east of Gothenburg in Dawson County, Nebraska, on November 23, 1936. She was the first of six children born to Stanley and Ilah (Koster) Preitauer. She received her primary education from Valley School District #47, prior to graduating from Gothenburg High School with the class of 1954.
On April 7, 1957 Adelyn was united in marriage to Clifford Hess of rural Farnam, Nebraska. After starting out in a one room house near Gothenburg, the couple rented a farm near Curtis, Nebraska. Two children were born to this union, Glenn and Marla. In 1965, they purchased a farm southwest of Alma, Nebraska, near Fisherman’s Gate. In addition to being a farmer’s wife, Adelyn was a Farmer. She pulled pigs, worked cattle, hilled and harvested crops. There was even an article written about her in the Nebraska Farmer Magazine.
Adelyn and Clifford were active in the surrounding communities. They were members of the Alma Evangelical Free Church, served on the board, in FCWM, VBS and AWANA. They were involved in Farm Bureau, 4-H, and served on the Eldorado Township Election Board. In addition, they volunteered at Camp Joy, handed out Bibles as members of Gideon’s International and were TFC Connection sponsors.
Faith and family were important to Adelyn. She asked Jesus to be her Lord and Savior in 1969 and enjoyed reading her Bible daily. She was creative, making decorations and centerpieces for special events. She even designed custom cakes for each of her grandkids’ birthdays.
Two years following Clifford’s passing, Adelyn moved into Orleans in 1996. She was active in the Civic Club and worked as a waitress at the Melrose Inn. She was also the custodian at Lakeside Fellowship Church in Alma until moving to York in 2013. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in various sports and school activities.
Adelyn was preceded in death by husband, Clifford; parents, Stanley and Ilah; sisters, Myrna Sawle and Joann Mathews; brother, William Preitauer; two sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.
She leaves behind her children: Glenn Hess and his wife, Cheryl of York, Nebraska and Marla (Hess) Svehla and her husband, Jerral of Omaha, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren: Channa (Hess) Evans and her husband, Lance of Fremont, Nebraska; Preston, Cierra, Valerie, Mataia, Zane and Jadon Hess of York; Ethan Svehla and his wife, Michelle of Grandview, Missouri; Solomon, Tamara and Sarah Svehla of Omaha; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Svehla of Grandview; brother, John Preitauer of Stamford, Nebraska; sister, Joyce Preitauer of Lincoln, Nebraska; in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
