Martha V. Black

Martha V. Black, 84, of Norris City, formerly of South Elgin, died at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000 at the Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi.

She was born May 20, 1916 in Farnam, Neb., the daughter of William and Hannah (Amstutz) Wharton. She married Dwight Kenneth Black on March 5, 1949, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 1980.

She was a nurse at the Elgin Mental Health Center in Elgin and a veteran Army nurse of World War II. She was a member of the United Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Norris City and the American Legion Post 109j.

Surviving are a sister, Florence Greenlee of Jesup, Ia.; two nieces, Sue Barlow of Columbia, Ill., and Mary Hayhoe of Columbia, Md.; and two nephews, Jim Vig of Sharon, N.D. and Gary Wharton of Bridge City, Texas.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 at the Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City. Burial and military graveside services conducted by American Legion Post 109 will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Norris City.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
