Obituary Collection
Sarah Margaret (Herndon) Palmer

Sarah Margaret Palmer passed away at North Platte, Nebraska December 19, 1944. She was born near Ladoga, Montgomery County, Indiana on September 14, 1851. Thus her sojourn on this earth was 93 years, 3 months, and 5 days.

At the age of three years, she was brought to Missouri by her parents [George Washington Herndon and Nary Rhoda (Jones) Herndon]. In 1870, she was united in marriage to William Elihu Palmer at Bancroft. To this union were born ten children. Her husband, who was a pioneer Baptist minister, preceded her in death March 10, 1919. Also six children preceded their mother in death. Rovell at the age of 14 months in 1872; Walter at the age of 11 years in 1887; Mary (Conrad) Callihan at the age of 59 years in 1932; Benjamin at the age of 68 years in 1933 and Sliah at the age of 61 years in May 1944.

Mrs. Palmer was baptized into a Baptist church at the age of 13 years. Later, becoming the devoted wife of a pioneer missionary minister, she experienced all the hardships which accompany the life of early settlers, together with the added burdens of many hours alone caring for the family.

The world owes much to these rugged God-fearing people who brought the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ into the heart of our great central west.

She leaves to mourn her going, two daughters, Mrs. Elvia Roberts of Denver and Mrs. Sarah Lintz of Sidney; two sons, William of southwest of Farnam and Raleigh of Ogallala; thirty-two grandchldren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Farnam Baptist Church Friday afternoon by Rev. W. B. Cain and burial was in the Moorefield, Nebraska cemetery.
