Frank Whetstone Accidently Shot and Killed Himself

Information of the untimely and sudden death of Frank Whetstone came as a shock to relatives and friends here, Sunday afternoon, when it was learned that he had accidently shot himself, dying later from the wound.

The accident occurred Sunday afternoon about 2 o’clock, while he and a couple of companions were out hunting squirrels. They boys had discovered a nest, which was thought to shelter squirrels, and Frank took hold of the barrel of his gun, a 12 gauge shotgun, and endeavored to punch the nest out of the tree, and it is supposed the hammer caught on the branches discharging the gun, sending the full load through the lower part of his left lung, just below the heart. Help and medical aid were immediately called, but to no avail. The last spark of life passed from the wounded body eight hours after the accident.

The deceased was a former Farnam boy, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Whetstone, formerly of this place, but Frank has been at Paxton, Nebr., the past two years working as foreman of a road gang. The large and profuse bouquets were the last possible tribute, that his many friends there could offer. Interment was made in the cemetery at Paxton Tuesday afternoon.

We desire to thank the Farnam boys, who contributed to the beautiful flowers sent for Frank’s funeral. They spoke so well of friendship true.....Howard Whetstone and Hugh.

The Farnam Echo, Vol. 42, No. 15, pg. 1, 14 FEB 1929

Note: Frank Whetstone was the son of Iva Bell (Sage) and Howard B. Whetstone. His grandmother, Lucy May (Walker) Sage Fletcher is buried in the Farnam cemetery.
