Leonard Thompson

Leonard Thompson, 70, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 1990, at Kearney. He was born Oct. 3, 1919, at rural Elwood to George and Caroline Woehrle Thompson. At the age of one, he moved with his parents to Elwood, living there until 1934, when they returned to the farm site where he was born. He lived there until his death.

Mr. Thompson graduated from Elwood High School in 1939, served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 and returned to Elwood where he farmed until his retirement in 1976. On March 4, 1950, he married Mary Tillotson (formerly of Farnam).

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elwood. Survivors include his wife, Mary; four daughters, Betty (Mrs. Steve) Kniss of Fort Collins, Colo., Karen (Mrs. Kevin) Exstrom of Good Hope, Ill., Sandra (Mrs. Kurt) Kinsman of Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and Susan (Mrs. Gale) Shafer of Edison; three sons, George and wife Linda of Snellville, Ga., Gary and wife Louise of Glenpool, Okla., and Kent of Elwood; a sister, Helen Thompson of Elwood; 12 grandchildren and a step-grandchild.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First united Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

A memorial has been established to the church.

Clark-Berryman Funeral Home of Elwood was in charge of arrangements.
