Eugene P. Speck
Funeral services for Eugene Speck were held at the Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 23, at 2 p.m., with Rev. W. T. Israel presiding. Interment was in the Benkelman Cemetery under the direction of Jay's Funeral Home.
Eugene P. Speck, oldest son of Peter and Mary Speck, was born at Farnam, Nebraska, on May 13, 1906, and spent his young manhood around that vicinity.
On December 21, 1935, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Eddingfield of Brady, Nebraska. To this union were born three children: Mrs. Glenda Yost of Commerce City, Colo., Mrs. Marilyn Dobrowski of Denver, Colorado, and Miles Speck, currently of the U. S. Navy.
The first year of their married life was spent on a farm and in the spring of 1937 he became employed by Lincoln county on road work. In October of 1942, he joined the Nebraska Department of Roads and the family moved to Holdrege, Nebraska, where they lived until December of 1949 when he was trasferred to Benkelman to become Maintenance Foreman.
On October 17, 1961, he underwent major surgery from which he never fully recovered and spent the last two years suffering from increasing pain. Every possible medical means was tried to ease his condition with no results and on October 18, 1963, major surgery was again tried to give him relief. The operation was too much for his heart in his weakened condition, and he passed away on the evening of October 19 at the age of 57 years, five months and six days. He had spent the last five months at the American Medical Center at Denver, where every medical means had been used to help him.
Gene was a man whose life and only thoughts were for his family and his job. A vacant spot has been left in a closely knit family and among his many friends and fellow employees.
He became a member of the Methodist Church in 1960 and until his illness was active in attendance.
He leave to mourn his passing his loving wife, Elizabeth, of the home; two daughters, Glenda and Marilyn; one son, Miles; one grandson, Randall Yost; one son-in-law, Ray Dobrowski; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Griffith of Birmingham, Alabama, Mrs. Jessie Martin of Farnam, Nebraska, and Mrs. Geneva Malick of Redmond, Oregon; one brother, Charles Speck, of Redmond, Oregon; and a host of other relatives and friends. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
