Leonard H. Reinders
Leonard H. Reinders, 62, of Phillips died Nov. 28, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
He was born May 4, 1937, to Herman and Catherine Ticker Reinders at Alliance, where he graduated from high school in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy from October 1954 to May 1958. After he was discharged, he attended Chadron State College and earned a bachelor's degree in education.
He married Linda Shay. He later worked towards his master's degree. He taught at Thedford and Valentine.
On Dec. 29, 1972, he married Janet Schurr at Grand Island. He worked a number of years as a counselor for various government and non-profit organizations. Recently he worked in the windshield repair service.
Mr. Reinders was a member of the United Veterans Club and the Saddle Club. He was an artist who enjoyed antiques, woodworking and gardening. Carhenge was designed by his brother, Jim, and built by the family near the family farm in Alliance.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Laurie Vaughan of Norfolk and Karen Oviedo of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two sons, Daniel of Huron, S.D., and Heath of Methuchen, N.J.; a sister and brother, Phyllis Nelson and Jim Rienders, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcy Reinders and his parents.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Dennis Reich officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Fort McPherson National cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family present from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island.
