Michael Owens

Michael Owens, a pioneer citizen of Frontier County for over seventy years, passed away at his home in Curtis, Nebraska, August 3, 1960, after a long illness, at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 19 days.

He was born in Enniskillen Fermanagh County, Ireland, the son of Patrick and Mary Owens. An older brother brought him and the rest of the members of his family to New York. From there they went to the home of an uncle in Illinois where they resided until they were old enough to establish homes of their own.

Mike came to Nebraska 1892, and in 1910 purchased the land which was to be his home for thirty-seven years. In 1947 he and his wife moved to Curtis, Nebraska. Farming and good livestock were one of his great loves.

On May 1, 1904, he was married to Augusta Gragg and to this union three children were born.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Augusta Owens of Curtis, one daughter, Mrs. Doris Shields of Curtis, and one son Doral of Stockville and his only grandchild, Rex Shields of Moab, Utah. One daughter, Rowena, passed away in infancy.

He died with the respect, admiration and love of those who knew him.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church of Curtis. Services were conducted from St. James Church, Saturday, August 6, 9 a.m. Father Anthony Kotz officiated. Burial was in Arbor Cemetery at Stockville, Nebr.

Organist was Mrs. Aurice Florom. Singers were Mrs. Shirley Dobesh and Mrs. Mary Ann Mercer.

Honorary Pallbearers were Joseph Henggeler, John Henggeler, Robert Miller, Alvah Nelson, W. A. Scharf and Clarence Woodring.

Active Pallbearers were Oscar Amstuz, Robert Fritsche, Albert Hablitzel, Grant Richey, Elmer Wilson and Donald Woods.
