Dale Clifton Montgomery
Dale Clifton Montgomery, 81, of North Platte, NE died Wednesday, July 16, 1997 at Linden Manor Nursing Home in North Platte. He was born June 13, 1916 at Bertrand, NE to Arthur Raleigh and Daisy Elizabeth (Atkinson) Montgomery. He grew up and graduated from school in Eustis, NE. He worked in the Black Hills of South Dakota in a gold mine, in a grocery store in Eustis, NE, and in a silica mine in the Eustis area.
Dale married his sweetheart Ella Antonia Dreher on July 31, 1938. To this marriage they brought three children; Merlin, Gwen, and Calvin. They started a grocery business together in Edison, NE in 1938. In 1940 they moved the business to Farnam, NE. In 1946 they added hardware and dry goods and owned the "Montgomery’s IGA and General Store" until they retired in 1980. They enjoyed their family, friends, United Methodist Church and community activities. Ella preceded Dale in death in 1982.
In 1939 Dale took a group of Boy Scouts to the first Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington, D.C.
Dale served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic on the USS Marblehead. As a member of the American Legion Post #288 he honored the Veterans by playing TAPS each year during the Memorial Day Services at the Farnam Cemetery and also for the funeral services of Veterans. Dale served on the Farnam Town Board and School Board. He was an active member of the Gothenburg Masonic Lodge, the Farnam American Legion, a charter member (1941) of the Farnam Lions Club, the I.O.O. F., and the Elks. He was a member of the Methodist and Lutheran Churches in Nebraska and Arizona, where he sang in the choirs, men’s quartets, and was a lay minister. He enjoyed his family, church activities, playing the piano, reading, taking adult education classes, golf, playing bridge, and taking trips.
Dale married Vera Louise Holbein Glascock on August 5, 1982. They wintered in Green Valley, AZ and spent their summers in North Platte, NE.
He is loved and leaves to mourn his passing his wife Vera ; a daughter, Gwen Elois Linker-Beal and husband Clarence Beal of Denver, CO; two sons, Merlin Walter Montgomery of Lilliwaup, WA, and Calvin Dale Montgomery of Tucson, AZ; a step-daughter, Jackie Glascock of San Diego, CA; a step-son, Doug and wife Sue Glascock of Dallas, TX: five grandchildren, Tom, Emily, and Annie Montgomery of Tucson, AZ; George Linker of Santa Barbara, CA; and Chris Linker of Denver, CO; and two sisters-in-law, Mabel Montgomery of Eustis, NE and Mable Montgomery of Stockton, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife Ella; his parents; three brothers, Lloyd and Art, and an infant, Welcome Montgomery.
Memorial Services were held at 10:00 a.m. – Monday, July 21, 1997 at Odean
Colonial Chapel in North Platte, NE. Inurnment of the Cremains with Military
Honors at Ft. McPerson National Cemetery Maxwell, NE. (Grave "1139", Section "G")
