Adam J. Howat
Adam J. Howat, 66, of 601 S. York, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1987 at the North Platte hospital.
He was born March 18, 1921, near Hastings to Elmer and Amelia Howat. In 1930, the family moved to a farm near Farnam. He served in the 35th Infantry Division of the U. S. Army during World War II and was the recipient of many medals, citations and the Purple Heart.
After his discharge in 1945, he made his home in North Platte. He retired after 17 years of service with the U. S. Postal Service in 1984. He formerly owned and operated the 215 Lounge and the Alamo Bar.
He married Sara Veneta Blaine; she preceded him in death. On Sept. 7, 1985, he married Barbara Hubby.
Mr. Howat served as quarter-master for the VFW Post 1504 and held that post for the past seven years. He also held other offices of the post and had been state VFW chairman. At the time of his death, he was serving as the Grand Commander for the Military Order of the Cootie, the Honor Degree of the VFW, for the State of Nebraska. He was a life member of the VFW, Military Order of the Cootie, American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Eagles, the Moose Lodge and NARFE.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two sons, Robert and Ronald, both of Omaha; a daughter, Carolyn Davis of Melbourne, Fla.; a stepson, David Hubby of Lincoln; a stepdaughter, Luana Morrow of Hastings; his mother-in-law, Rena Score of Lewellen; a brother, Nickolas of Lancaster, Calif.; and eight grand children.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Adams and Swanson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bob Gelsthrope of the North Platte Baptist Church officiation. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors graveside.
The casket will not be open following the service.
A memorial has been established. Adams and Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
