Obituary Collection
J. Iola Hinton

J. Iola Hinton, 96, formerly of Stockville and Curtis, died November 11, 2008, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, Nebraska.

Iola was born on August 4, 1912, north of Dickens, Nebraska, to H.A. “Gus” and Nellie (Pearson) Latimer.

Her siblings were Mabel, Claude, and Lynn. They grew up together on the farm – ranch where they raised Registered Hereford Cattle and learned the value of a hard day’s work. On Iola’s 16th birthday, she milked 10 cows by herself as her family was late getting home from picking cherries. Her mother taught in a rural school north of Dickens and before Iola was old enough to enroll, she would accompany her mom on horseback. Iola had many “babysitters”.

She entered Dickens High School and attended there until she entered North Platte High as Dickens did not offer shorthand. She graduated in 1929. Later she came to Curtis to “nanny” for Jackie Hagadorn, who happened to be Dale A. Hinton’s niece. Dale and Iola fell in love and were married February 12, 1936, at the Frontier County Courthouse in Stockville with Lauren Messersmith officiating (he happened to be Dale’s superintendent of schools). They moved to a sod house six miles west of Stockville and Dale taught at North Star #29 for several years. Nadine was born there at the soddy, with Dr. Magill and Grandma Dettra assisting. Don was born 2 ½ years later at the Farnam Hospital.

Dale and Iola moved their family 1 ½ miles north and east to the Hinton farm which still exists today. They enjoyed card parties, square dancing, baseball games, and having fun with their neighbors. They were very involved in their kid’s activities. Nadine was married to Harold Brown in 1960 and Don was married to Carrol Dowling in 1963. Harold and Nadine were blessed by Chip, Rick, Nick and Jill. Don and Carol were blessed by Kimberly, Kevin and Kirby.

Dale and Iola farmed until December 1969 when they bought their home at 408 Ord Avenue in Curtis and lived there until Dale passed away on September 11, 1981. Iola continued living there until July 1987. She lived with her daughter Nadine and husband Harold Brown for 13 years. She later was a resident of Senior Living Choices in Curtis and Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, Nebraska.

All seven grandchildren were loved so much by Granddad and Grandma Hinton and that love was a two way street. Grandma was an excellent cook and each grandchild would request his or her favorite dish. Among the favorites were creamed peas, angel food cake, homemade doughnuts, chicken and noodles and an endless supply of ice cream.

In the driveway of their home was a basketball hoop which had to have many nets replaced. The “hoop” was a favorite hangout for the grandkids and their friends.

Iola was a Member of the Congregational Church in Stockville where she taught Sunday school for many years, Gay 60’s Club of Curtis, Stockville Women’s Fellowship, Pinochle and Pitch Clubs. Iola was especially fond of watching Husker Football, keeping score for baseball games, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles and writing poetry. She was also a volunteer at Sunset Haven Rest Home and was a “Taxi driver” for her many friends who needed rides to Dr. appointments.

Iola is survived by her daughter Nadine Brown of Curtis; grandsons, Chip and wife Lory Brown of Springdale, AR and their children Joel, Justin, Jamie and Melissa; Rick and wife Elaine Brown of McCordsville, IN and their children Nathan, Rachel, Renee and Ryan; Nick and wife Amy Brown of Curtis, NE and children Connor, Alissa, Joseph, Madison and Ethan; granddaughter, Jill and husband Adam Patel of Curtis, NE and their children Joshua, Kyla and Jonathan; granddaughter Kmberly and husband Mike Keturoskey of Sedalia, Mo and their children Lyndsey Chaulk and son Kamryn of Lincoln NE, and Lance Chaulk of Fort Cambell, KY; grandson Kevin and wife Annthie Hinton and children Kylie, Kellen, and Kaylor of Lincoln, NE; grandson Kirby and wife Tara Hinton and children Koby and Tanner of Omaha, NE.
