Irene Lydia Hercy, 94 , of Gothenburg, NE died September 22, 2007 at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
Irene Lydia Hercy was born on November 14, 1912 to William Edwin and Maud Gertrude (Horn) Hopkins at home South of Farnam, NE. She lived with her grandmother while going to school and graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1930. After school she taught as a substitute teacher for a short time.
On October 3, 1942 she married Robert Hercy at McCook, NE. Bob was a sergeant in the US Army. Bob was severely injured in WWII and as a result became a paraplegic. Bob and Irene moved to Des Moines, Iowa were Bob was in the VA Medical Center.
In 1947 they moved to Gothenburg where Irene took care of Bob for the next forty eight years until his death. Irene never complained about taking care of Bob. Irene enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and taking care of her yard. Her favorite thing though was taking care of her husband.
Irene is survived by her brother Earl Hopkins of Farnam, NE; sister-in-laws Alice Hopkins of Palisade, NE; Ethel Hopkins of Baker, OR; Betty Hopkins of Omaha, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, one sister and eight brothers. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 25, 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 26, 10:00 am at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska, with Pastor Larry Viter officiating. Burial will take place in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.
