Eva Lucille (Johnson) Britton
Eva Lucille Britton, 79, of North Platte died May 4, 1999, of cancer. She was born Jan 16, 1920 south of Gothenburg to Rollin and Hazel (Anderson) Johnson. She attended rural school District No. 33 south of Gothenburg. She graduated from Gothenburg High School with the Class of 1938 with a third-grade elementary teacher's certificate.
After attending classes at Kearney State Teacher's College, she then taught in rural schools in Dawson and Custer counties. She was involved in 4-H as a girl and was a leader for several years.
On Nov. 7, 1942, she married Clayton E. Britton. While he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, she continued to teach. They moved to North Platte in 1946 following the war.
In 1953, she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of North Platte, where she taught Sunday school and served as an elder and deacon. In addition, she was a supporter of scouting. She served as a Cub Scout den mother and was the mother of five boy scouts, including three who achieved Eagle Scout rank. She was involved with the Parent-Teacher Association and was an honorary life member. She was also a patron of area performing arts.
In 1967, she began a career in the lodging business. Over the years, she worked at the El Rancho Motel, Cedar Lodge and Cody Hotel. She retired in 1998 after 24 years at the Pawnee Retirement Hotel.
Mrs. Britton was a caring mother, a loving wife and a wonderful friend to many.
Surviving her is a daughter, Hazel Lucille "Lisa" (Charles) Wing of Omaha; five sons, Robert LaVern (Clydene), Edward Eugene and his fiancée Linda Eacker, Larry Lee and his special friend Lee Kautz, David Layne (Konnie) and Michael Alan (Deb) all of North Platte; a stepson, Charles Clayton of Pinellas Park, Fla.; a stepdaughter-in-law, Thelma of Trevor, Wis.;10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; an aunt, Henrietta Frank of Kearney; and numerous cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Memorials are suggested to the church building fund, Friends of Scouting, the Neville Center or the hospice program.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Amy Jo Hawley officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home and prior to services at the church on Friday.
