Dr. David Leland Jones

Dr. David Leland Jones, 61, of Colorado Springs, passed away on January 25, 2012 at the Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs, CO. following a battle with cancer.

David was born on April 16, 1950 to Leland and Ellen (Anderson) Jones in Buffalo, New York. His family moved to Nebraska when he was five years old. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1968. While in high school he enjoyed basketball, track and band. Following graduation, he attended MidAmerica Nazarene College, completing his degree in May 1972. On October 20, 1973, he married Louise Oberg.

He worked in cancer research at KU Medical Center following his graduation and entered medical school at University of Health Sciences in Kansas City in 1977 and earned his D.O. degree in May 1981. He received a military scholarship for medical school and entered the Army following his graduation.

He completed his internship at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center. Following this, David accepted an assignment to Fort Richardson, Alaska beginning a two year adventure up north. The Army brought them back to Fitzsimmons for more training and then to Fort Lewis in Tacoma Washington. He completed his Pathology residency at Madigan Army Medical Center.

The family moved to Colorado Springs in 1993 where David practiced pathology at Evans Army Hospital until 1998 when he was transferred to Irwin Army Hospital at Fort Riley, Kansas. He retired from the Army in 2005, completing 23 years of service to his country.

Following retirement from the Army, he was accepted into a surgical pathology fellowship program at Allegheny General in Pittsburg, PA. Following his fellowship he practiced in Fort Collins Co. and then did contract work at several locations across the country. He enjoyed the camaraderie of the people he worked with and was always a favorite of many because of the kindness and interest he had for each person.

David loved his family and enjoyed the time he was able to spend with them. He was a very proud Dad of his four sons.

David is survived by his wife, Louise, sons – Matthew, Christopher, Timothy and Peter; sisters Donna Hollinger and Shirley Komoto, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Jones and mother Ellen Jones.

Memorials may be made to Springs First Church of the Nazarene youth department, MidAmerica Nazarene University music department and the Pikes Peak Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 29, 2012 at 3:00pm at Springs First Church of the Nazarene.

Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at the Farnam Cemetery in Farnam, Nebraska.
