John Flagler Whitney

John Flagler Whitney, son of James and Ruth Whitney, was born Sept. 26, 1860, at Beckman, Dutcher Co., New York, and passed away after an illness of three weeks at his home near Farnam, April 2, 1934, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 5 days.

He came with his parents to Brownsville [sic], in eastern Nebraska, when 7 years old, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Maggie Bicknell, in February, 1881. To this union five children were born.

In 1889 he came as a pioneer to Farnam and settled on the homestead where he lived at the time of his death.

His wife and three daughters preceeded him in death and he leaves to mourn, his loss one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Woolstrum of Grainton, Neb., and one son, Willis of Farnam, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Taylor of Zion, Ill., and Mrs. Laura Babcock of White Cloude, Mich.; thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He gave his heart to Christ in early manhood and joined the Farnam Baptist Church soon after it was organized and was the first treasurer of this church. He was a kind and loving father, a good neighbor, and will be greatly missed.

“Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me,
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea.
Fro tho’ from out our bourne of time and place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.”
      —Tennyson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. E. C. Barton, of Mason City. Interment was in the Farnam cemetery.

The Farnam Echo, 53(31) Thursday, April 5, 1934
