William Elwood Wharton
Willam Elwood Wharton son of Thomas and Sarah Wharton, was born September 24, 1861 at Appleby, Westmoreland county, England, and passed away November 2, 1945, at his home in Farnam, at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 9 days.
He was the eldest of seven children. His parents and four brothers and a sister preceded him in death. His brother Mark and sister Mrs. Annie Hope still reside in England.
In 1886, he came to America and settled at Jerseyville, Ill. Two years later he moved to Moorefield, Nebraska, and made his home there until 1909. At that time he moved to his farm south of Farnam where he has lived for the past 37 years. Last spring he and Mrs. Wharton moved to their home in Farnam. Mr. Wharton made two trips back to England since coming to America, thus crossing the ocean five times.
He attended the Episcopal church while living in England. In 1910 he was baptized and joined the Church of God at Moorefield. After moving to Farnam he was a faithful attendant at the Methodist church serving on the official church board and teaching the mens Sunday school class for many years. His presence and the many inspirational talks he gave to the church at various times were a great help to all. The pastors of the church always found a warm welcome and fellowship in the Wharton home.
He enjoyed execllent health until the last few months. He was keen minded and cheerful until he quietly slipped away Friday evening with Mrs. Wharton sitting beside him.
Mr. Wharton took an interest in all worthwhile community activities for many years. He was an earnest bible student and his life was a true example of devout Christian living. He will be greatly missed as he and Mrs. Wharton were always among the first to call on each new neighbor and in any home where there was illness.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Hannah, his son Harold of Gering, his daughter Helen of Lincoln, daughter Mrs. Florence Greenlee of Waterloo, Iowa, and dauther Lt. Martha Wharton, an army nurse who has just returned from 30 months overseas duty, two step-daughters, Mrs. Naoma Farris of Chicago and Mrs. Bessie Vig of Sharon, N. Dak., also 4 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Chester Hugo funeral parlors in Gothenburg to the local Methodist church, with Rev. McCaig, Rev. Rodewald and Rev. Geisler officiating. Interment was in Farnam cemetery.
