Jay L. Rice

Jay L. Rice, 95, passed away Friday, April 21, 1995 at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1899 to Jacob and Luella Lydic Rice in Frontier County near Farnam.

He attended Frontier County schools. He married Virginia Williams on Sept. 18, 1924. They were song evangelists in the Church of the Nazarene for several years. They made their home in Wichita, KS, later moving to Frontier Co. When Virginia's mother died, they made a home for her brothers, Dale and Russell Williams. Virginia passed away in September, 1956. In 1959 he married Rev. Rutha McCulley of Ainsworth and they pastored the Church of the Nazarene in Gothenburg until her death in 1966. He married Vera Timm of Carthage MO, in 1968. She preceded him in death in 1988.

Jay farmed until he retired in 1966 when he moved to Gothenburg. He was active in the church all his life and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene at Cozad.

He is survived by one daughter, Pauline (Paul) Sukraw of Gothenburg; one son, Earl (Lois) Rice of Del Rio, Tex., and Russell (Charlot) Williams; one sister, Nellie Rice of Gothenburg; three step-daughters, Pearl Knox of Oklahoma City, OK, Elaine Baker and Velma Holz of Carthage, MO; five grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; one brother, Dean and two sisters, Elizabeth Klooz and Laura Day.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 25, at the Church of the Nazarene in Farnam with Rev. John Bowlby officiating. Pallbearers were Brad Williams, Scott Weissert, Steve Hovendick, Rick Williams, Floyd Lindekugel, Elvin Gardner, Ervin Hess and Dennis Kirkpatrick. Internment was in the Farnam Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Church of the Nazarene.
