Grace Ann (Wood) McNickle
Grace Ann Wood, eldest daughter of James Harrison Wood and Adell Louisa Griffis, was born at Arapahoe, Nebraska, on December 28, 1881, and died in an Omaha hospital, November 10, 1947, at the age of 65 years, 10 months and 13 days.
She moved to Farnam with her parents in 1888, spending her entire girlhood there. She was married to Arthur Daniel McNickle on December 25, 1902. To this union were born 11 children, 8 boys and 3 girls; Dell, of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Arthur, of Tacoma, Wash.; Max, of Farnam; Ralph, of Fairmont, Neb.; Mrs. Gwendolyn Cross, of Denver; Francis, of Sheridan, Wyo.; Clark, of Farnam; Mrs. Kathleen Myers, of Penrose, Colo.; James, of Littleton, Colo.; Mrs. Phyllis Allred of Twin Falls, Idaho and Maynard, who died October 13, 1921.
She was baptized into the Baptist church at the age of 13, and was a faithful member at the time of her death. She was an earnest Christian throughout the years.
She was a member and leader of the Baptist Ladies' Aid and Congregational Society for many years. She was devoted to her family and friends, and ever willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. She had the esteem and love of all neighbors and friends and of the entire community. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, 7 sons, 3 daughters, 6 daughters-in-law, 3 sons-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 1 sister: Mrs. Frank Tisdell of Wood, South Dakota, and 2 brothers: Allyn of San Diego, Calif., and Charles of Gary, Indiana; also many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the high school auditorium in Farnam, Nebraska, on Thursday, November 13, 1947, at 2 p.m. The clergyman in charge was Rev. E. C. Barton, with Rev. Stanley Malmgren assisting. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Charles Pollard, Dave Banks, Dale Montgomery and Earl Hess with Mrs. Raymond Smith as pianist. The pallbearers were Byron Taylor, Arch Jorgenson, Chris Hess, Charles Davis, Joe Hicks and Ernie Lewis. Interment was in the Farnam cemetery.
