Miles F. Martin was born July 27, 1840, in Coles county, Illinois, and died March 30, 1912, near Farnam, Nebraska.

He grew to manhood in Illinois and on August 4, 1859, was united in marriage to Rhoda A. Martin. To this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters, five of whom with their mother, twenty-one grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive him to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband and father.

The surviving children are J. T. Martin of Farnam, Neb.; Mrs. Martha Trindel and Mrs. Etta Uhlig, both of Ralston, Wyo.; Mrs. Nora Westrope of Denver, Colo.; J. O. Martin of Martindale, Neb.; and Milo Martin, a grandson, who had been raised from infancy by his grandparents and was considered as one of the children.

The deceased answered the call of Lincoln and enlisted in the 10th Illinois Cavalry in 1861, and served over four years, being mustered out at the close of the war, contracting diseases in the arm from which he was never free.

About twenty-five years ago he was converted and joined the Church of Christ at Shickley, Nebraska, and remained steadfast in the faith until the last. For the last two years of his life he was a helpless invalid and endured much suffering, but the end came peacefully, closing his eyes as though he was going to sleep.

To know him was to respect him. He was a loving husband, a kind father and a generous neighbor. He had a kind word for all. No one appealed to him in vain in time of need or distress. His character was above reproach. He never intentionally wronged any man.
