Dr. Liggitt Died Thursday
Dr. John McCord Liggitt was born in Chandlersville, Ohio, November 12, 1872, and passed away on December 12, 1940, aged 68 years and 1 month.
He came to Nebraska in 1891 and made his home with his brother, Charles, who had taken a homestead west and north of Farnam. He taught school two years in Ingham and studied medicine with an uncle, Dr. LaRue, in Stockville. He then attended medical college in Columbus, Ohio, from which he graduated with honors in 1897.
That year he opened an office in Farnam and encountered all of the difficulties of a young doctor in a new country. Some of the drives he made in those days in blizzards, rains and storms were worthy of record in the history of Nebraska.
With the exception of six years in the Government Indian service, two years as mine physician in a coal mining camp in Kemmerer, Wyo., and two years practicing in Scotts Bluff county, his entire active life was spent in Farnam.
No one ever asked his services in vain. His whole life was devoted to doing all he could to aid the sick and many trips were made in all kinds of weather to relieve sickness when he well knew the money return would be little or nothing.
He was married to Mary [Robson] December 28, 1898, to which union four children were born: Mrs. Hazel Selleck of Arcadia, California, Mrs. Margaret Patillo, and John Liggitt of Huntington Park, California, and a daughter, Maud, who died in infancy. He was a loving husband, a kind father and a very desirable citizen—a credit to any community.
His death came after three days illness and is a very serious loss to the community, and his friends, who unusually numerous, will miss him greatly. He has gone to his reward which he so richly earned.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the St. Matthew Episcopal church of Farnam by Rev. Robert Johnson, under the direction of the Olesen Funeral Service. Interment was in Farnam cemetery.
