Maud Lewis

Maud Ruth Swan was born on a homestead near Dodge City, Kansas , December 2, 1886. She passed away January 15, 1977 at her home in Farnam. Maud's parents were Hugh and Anna Swan.When Maud was 8 years old the family moved to a farm in Fillmore County close to Fairmont.

She was graduated from Fairmont High School in 1904. She taught two years in a rural school; then spent four years at home helping her mother, whose health wasn't good.

In 1910 she was united in marriage to Ernest Lewis. A daughter Ruth was born December 1912; in 1914 they moved to Frontier County twelve miles south of Farnam and twelve miles southwest of Eustis. On June 7, 1915; a son Ronald Walter was born.

In 1920 the family moved to a farm one mile south of Farnam. For two years they had a milk route. In 1922 they ran a hotel in Farnam.

In the spring of 1929 they moved to a home south of the railroad track and Ernie ran a cream station; Maud helped there too. In 1938 they leased the standard station until 1948.

Maud and Ernie observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1960 and their 65th anniversary in 1975.

In the spring of 1972 they moved downtown closer to their daughter and husband, Ruth and Max.

Maud celebrated her 90th birthday with an Open House at the Methodist Church November 27, 1976.

Maud was a member of United Methodist Church North Aid and Adult Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge.

She is survived by her husband Ernie of Farnam; one daughter Ruth and her husband Max of Farnam; one granddaughter, Janet Mandery and her husband Alvin of Lincoln; two great-granddaughters Kimberly and Maurine of Lincoln; two step-great-granddaughters Regina and Le Anne Mandery; one step great-great-grandson Jason Thompson; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, one brother; and one son, Ronald.

Maud was a wonderful loving wife mother, grand mother and great grand mother. She was always so kind and thoughtful to her family and friends.

Services were held Tuesday January 18, 1977 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist church of Farnam with the Rev. Leonard S. Clark and Rev. Harold Ellis officiating.

Music was furnished by mrs. Robert Speck, Mrs. Anton Kotschwar and Mrs. Elvin Peirsol.

Casket bearers were Dean Bassett, Donald Bassett, Darrell Bassett, Ralph Lewis, Walter Lewis, and Glendale Conroy.

Honorary bearers were Earl Fritz, Jack Schultz, Charles Davis, Dale McNickle, E.A. King, Gene Bosch, George Schanow and Russell Wilcox.

Burial was in the Farnam Cemetery.
