Obituary
Catherine Whitaker was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1851, and died at Farnam, Nebraska, November 19, 1917. She was married to H. G. Hicks, September 17, 1879. To this union were born two sons and two daughters, Arthur O., Joseph L., Catherine R., and Helen A.
In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Hicks with their family moved to Frontier county, Nebraska from Stratford, Iowa, and were among the first to take a homestead in this vicinity, enduring all the hardships of those early pioneer days. In later years they moved to Peru, Nebraska, where their children were educated, remaining there for twelve years, after which they returned to Farnam.
Mrs. Hicks was an exceptionally kind and sympathetic woman, always ready and willing to do good for others, and during her six years of patient suffering was never heard to complain of her misfortune. She was a faithful member of the Episcopal church.
The funeral service was held at the Hicks residence at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Archdeacon Geo. G. Ware of Kearney, officiating. Interment was made in the Farnam cemetery.
The pall bearers were: Messrs. M. J. Tufts, J. B. Kitchen, J. T. Hinkley, W. H. H. Dryden, E. R. Chitty and E. W. Crossgrove.
