Mrs. Viola L. Divoll
Mrs. Viola L. Divoll was born January 3, 1837, in the city of
Chautauqua, New York, and died in Trenton, Nebraska of old age,
May 5th, 1919.
When a girl of sixteen she met and afterward married George
Divoll, than a Baptist pastor of her church. Mr. Divoll preceded
her to the grave about twenty years ago.
To this union were born two children, a son and daughter. The
daughter passed away twenty six years ago at the age of
thirty-six.
Mr. and Mrs. Divoll moved from Genesee, N.Y. where he was pastor
of the Baptist church about twenty three years ago, and lived
in Farnam until just a few years ago when Mrs. Divoll moved with
her son to Trenton, Nebr., where she fell asleep in Jesus.
Mr. and Mrs. Divoll were instrumental in organizing the Baptist
church in Farnam and helped to secure funds for eastern friends
to erect the present building; without their help it is doubtful
if a church of that faith could have been maintained in those
trying and changing years.
She was a charter member of the United States W. C. T. U. and
also of the Farnam chapter, always proud to display the white
ribbon and fought not only against liquor but was also found
fighting for the rights of women, especially in the interest of
suffrage.
Often times Mrs. Divoll would read some of Mr. Divoll's sermons
to the Baptist church when that church was without a pastor;
thus she kept the church fires burning, when to have them go out
would mean death to the organization.
Any movement to uplift mankind was sure to get her sympathy and
help.
Her sacrifice was limited by her ability.
She leaves to friends and relatives an inspiring example of
christian fortitude and her life was a living sermon of the
power of God, to the keeping power of God's gospel to keep one
sweet in disposition and patient in suffering.
It may be said of her, "A mother has fallen in Israel."
