Walker in the Pen
John B. Walker, the murderer of George P. Stevens, now under sentence of death, was taken to Lincoln Tuesday last by Sheriff Hobson, where he will be securely confined in the state penitentiary until Friday, May 11, the day set for his execution, or until such time as the state supreme court may pass upon his application for a new trial. It was a matter of both economy to the county and the safe keeping of the prisoner to send him to the state penitentiary. It cost Dawson county four dollars and a half for every day Walker was confined in the county jail after his sentence—two dollars each for the two guards or death-watch and fifty cents for his board. In the state’s prison he will be cared for at an expense of one dollar and a half per day.
