Bud Hathaway Awarded Unusual Military Medal
“Order of Purple Heart,”
Awarded for Wounds
Received at Verdun.
John O. (Bud) Hathaway received a medal last week from the United States War department, known as the medal of the “Order of the Purple Heart.” This medal was awarded Mr. Hathaway, for wounds received in the battle of Verdun, while serving with the American forces in France, during the World War. He was wounded five times by shrapnel.
This medal was originated by George Washington, and is only awarded for being wounded in action or for unusual bravery.
The medal is a gold heart, with a bust of George Washington, on a purple background, hanging from a purple ribbon. On the reverse side is engraved, “For military merit, and the name, John O. Hathaway.
