SENIOR CITIZEN’S PARTY

The first "Senior Citizen’s Party" was held by the American Legion Auxiliary on September 30, 1952. Leith Parker was our Auxiliary President and she felt that we needed to do something to honor our Senior Citizens in our community. Invitations were sent to anyone living in Farnam or on the Farnam mail route who was 80 years old. We had a real good attendance. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. Everyone remarked how nice it was! So this was the beginning of our yearly event.

Sixteen guests attended our first party. They were: Joe Carmichael, Tom Castor, Howard Gardner, Adolph Gewecke, Viola Hathaway, Jack Colligan, Henry Roetter, Allie Stebbins, Jim Harry, Harry Messersmith, Ida Parker, Minnie Parker, George Peirsol, Harry Taylor, Al Thrasher and Mae Wilmeth.

In 1956, it was decided by the Auxiliary members to drop the age to 75 years. If you become 75 while living in Farnam or on the Farnam mail route you are eligible for our party. If you move away after you are on the list we still keep your name on. Each year we add new names of those eligible.

It is such a fulfilling and rewarding afternoon. It is so nice to visit with our honored guests as they are the back-bone of our community. We issue invitations to the honored guests but ask and beg some of the relatives and friends to come with them and enjoy the afternoon. A program is planned, lunch is served and each is given a gift for a rememberance.

We have had twenty-nine parties. Our party this fall, in 1981, will be our thirtieth party.
