THE GOLDEN JUBILEE - THE FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY
OF FARNAM

Wednesday and Thursday, August 5th and 6th, 1936 were special days set aside by the Farnam community for celebrating its 50th birthday.

The weather cooperated very well and even though money was scarce to most people, many attended the Golden Jubilee celebration.

The village newspaper carried items about the early settlers, the state from which they had come, and interesting incidents that happened to them. The newspaper was even printed on gold colored newsprint. It consisted of thirty pages, the largest newspaper ever printed in Farnam.

Many of the first settlers were still here to reminisce about changes that time had made. Some of the old settlers visited with returning guests in a building that was provided for them. This building was known as the John Frank Shoe Store. The committee had announced that the building would be decorated, chairs and other provisions for them to rest and visit would be provided. A hostess would be in constant attendance. Benches in front of the stores provided a place for other old timers to visit.

The two day celebration was well organized with many people helping to make it successful.

On the program for the gala event scheduled for Wednesday for 10 A.M., was a concert by the Eustis band. Thursday morning the Gothenburg Band presented a concert. At 10:30 Fred Gaibler and his trained horses showed their talent and at 11:30 the DeKohl Troupe performed in the middle of main street. The DeKohl Troupe was proclaimed by the press and the public as the World’s most outstanding Juggling Act on rolling globes. The Fifiteth Anniversary Edition of the Farnam Echo described their performances in three acts. In Act I five people were involved in a thrilling and spectacular rolling globe act. It was something new and different from other juggling acts. Featuring DeKohl on the stair of thrills, it promised the people that its troupe was the most elaborate costumed troup in America besides being the only act of its kind in America. In Act II there was a daring balancing act using a twenty foot steel perch involving two people. Act III was a balancing act that was performed by an equilibrist in her own original style. These acts were being featured at three state fairs in 1936, namely, Missouri, Alabama, and Florida.

The noon hour was left open for the picnic dinners for guests and friends. The Will Peterson building was opened to the public as a gathering place for families and for picnic parties.

At 1 P.M. the entertainment began again with a band concert that featured Farnam’s Band, followed by boys and girls races that were also divided into age groups. Prizes were given for first and second place and in some instances prizes were given for third place. The prizes ranged from $1.00 to 25 cents. For children under eight years of age there was the all exciting penny shower.

At 2:30 a close baseball game was promised between two rival baseball teams - Eustis and Oxford.

At 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday evening, C. G. Binderup, congressman from Minden, spoke to the people at the celebration. On Thursday evening the Honorable Dwight Griswold was to speak.

At 8:15 there was a novelty dance by our own Jean Thrasher. Billed as our own because she was formerly of Farnam, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. 0. Thrasher.

The DeKohl Act was featured again at 8:30 and to round out the evening, a legion dance was held on a platform north of the Ford Garage. The Les Graham orchestra furnished the music.

The Theatre boasted a continuous program starting at 1:30 in an air-conditioned building.

A big carnival company had arranged to be in Farnam for these two days, having a group of attractions, consisting of shows, concessions and rides.

There was a minature train for the amusement of the children and a junior automobile was advertised to be given away to some lucky boy or girl on Thursday.

To advertise the Golden Jubilee the entire community was invited to a booster meeting in Gothenburg where a game of kittenball was played. The cars would leave Farnam at 8 P.M. and Gothenburg promised to show the visitors a splendid time.

August 5th and 6th, 1936 were indeed special days for the Farnam community. The good times remembered by different ones today that attended the 50’th celebration varied from a nickel hamburger, the merry-go-round rides for a nickel, to the visiting with the old timers that were there. It depended very much upon the age of the person as to what the highlights of the celebration were. The most important aspect of the Golden Jubilee was the first settlers of Farnam. We can only imagine what the old timers talked about and how they felt as they visited on this 50th birthday of Farnam. The changes they had seen, the more conveniences that were available in 1936, the people who had moved away or passed on.

No doubt whatever the conversation was, they were enjoying themselves, but nothing would take the place of the good old days.
