ARMISTICE DAY - NOVEMBER 11th - VETERANS DAY
November 11 used to be a day set aside for a celebration. It was Armistice Day. One typical Armistice Day celebration was in 1934. The program was advertised as being "A Big Day of Fun" sponsored by The Farnam American Legion and Commercial Club. There was an important speaker from Lincoln, a football game between Farnam and Wilsonville, a free picture show starting at four in the afternoon, and a dance that would start at nine o’clock in the evening.
In the morning there would be races that the young would participate in. Prizes were given for first and second places. There would be a greased pole event, a penny shower for the kids, and cowboy singing to be judged. There was a parade with prizes given for various stipulations.
November 11th celebrations were a thing of the past when World War II came along. Then later, the American Legion sponsored a program that would last for an hour or so, featuring a speaker and other interesting topics or selections that were fitting. These are not annual events. Armistice Day is now known as Veterans Day.
