Then there were DISASTERS
NOVEMBER 25-26, 1948 BLIZZARD
Snow and wind storm hit Farnam about 4:00 A.M. It continued without let up most of Friday. It was 16 degrees above Friday A.M. Trains were unable to get through the rest of the week. The snowplow came from the west Friday night, but it was stuck for several hours in a drift near Loomis, Nebraska.
Electricity was off from 8:00 Thursday until 1:30 Friday P.M. The result was that some residents were without heat and electricity to cook.
Roads and highways were impassable. At school students were not permitted to go home Thursday. Lunch was provided for them. Those in the country couldn’t go home unless their parents came after them at the end of the day, so most of the students stayed in town at various homes. The school had an electric stoker heating plant so no attempt was made to open school on Friday.
The snow was wet and heavy. Some loss of livestock was reported. Then again Saturday morning another four inches of snow fell, but there was no wind so it didn’t drift.
