Then there were DISASTERS
POST OFFICE ROBBED AT FARNAM
July 28, 1899
The Farnam Post Office was broken into early Sunday morning, the safe blown open and $481 secured. Burglars gained entrance through the front door of the building by using a bridge spike and then broke the lock on the partition door with a heavy file.
The tools used in completing the job were a drill, a large spike and file and were stolen from the blacksmith shop of M. Mogenson. From all appearances they must have had experience in this line of business although they can not be called experts. They drilled a hole in top of the safe and put in sufficient dynamite to blow a heavy door through the partition and a distance of fifteen feet. Loss to Postmaster Bradshaw will be $75 provided he does not have to make good the loss to Uncle Sam, but in case he does it will reach the sum of $500. Miss Pearle Caley, the deputy, had about $20 in the safe at the time but her loss was quickly made up by a number of business men of the town.
The burlgars left no clues whatever.
Wrecked Bank Safe Blown up at Farnam. Neb.. Friday. October 16. 1903
There have been two other bank robberies in Farnam. One occurred in 1916 and another recent one on July 29, 1975. A lone bank robber took about $6000 and a hostage from the Farnam Bank. After leaving the bank with the hostage’s car, he changed cars southwest of town, where an accomplice was waiting for him. The robber was captured in a field west of Farnam about thirty hours after the robbery. The hostage was released unharmed.
