Gertrude Malmstrom

Gertrude Ruth Malmstrom was born January 7, 1908 at Farnam, Nebraska to Edgar and Gertrude (Snay) Hurley and died July 22, 1988 at the Valley County Hospital in Ord at the age of 80.

She was less than one month old when her mother died and she was adopted by Harley and Edith Greene of North Loup. She lived with her adopted parents in North Loup, Sheridan, Wyoming, Ashland, Montana, and Red Wing, Wisconsin where she attended public schools. She married Reuben Malmstrom October 24, 1929 at West Point. They farmed near Fairfield, North Loup, Greeley, and finally retiring in Scotia in 1972.

Gertrude was a member of the Scotia United Methodist Church and the Easter Star Crystal Chapter 43 at Scotia. She also belonged to the Green Thumbs Flower and Garden Club, the Progressive Club and United Methodist Women and Daughters of Faith Circle.

Survivors include her husband, Reuben of Scotia; three sons, Lyle of Scotia, Robert of Columbus, and Warren of Lincoln; one daughter, Norma Hansen of Albany, OR; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren; one sister, Elva Dunson of Maple Valley, WA; one step-brother, Rev. Kenneth Van Horn of Little Rock, AR and one step-sister, Elsie Ewing of Gering. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held July 23, 1988 at the Scotia United Methodist church with Rev. Wayne Alloway officiating. Concluding services were conducted by the Eastern Star Crystal Chapter 43. The pianist was Melvin Shoemaker and the solist was DeWayne Bussell. Pallbearers were David, Bill, Tom, Mike, Mark and Ray Malmstrom. Burial was in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia. Ord Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
