Terrible Death
Of Hon. D. C. Ballentine, at
Benkleman, on Tuesday.

On last Tuesday afternoon our city was in a state of excitement and sorrow occasioned by the receipt of a telegram announcing the sudden and accidental death of Hon. David C. Ballentine, at Benkleman, who while attempting to board the east-bound K. C. express was thrown under the car-wheels, and horribly mangled.

He was immediately taken to McCook for medical assistance, which proved unavailing, and after three hours of intense suffering, life passed away and he returned to his maker. The train it appears, does not stop at the station, and was going at a moderate rate of speed when the deceased attempted to get on the back end of the smoking-car but was encumbered with a heavy valise which prevented his securing a hold with but one hand swinging him under the wheels of the following car, which passed over his hips, with the above fatal results. His wife was at their home at Stockville, where word was immediately sent that he had received fatal injuries, but the bereaved wife did not arrive at McCook until life was extinct. The deceased was 39 years of age, and present state senator from this dist., and enjoyed the universal respect of his neighbors, and esteem of friends all over the state. At the senatorial convention held at Indianola yesterday, the following resolutions were adopted:

Whereas, We have been informed of the unfortunate and untimely death of our fellow-citizen and present state senator, the Hon. D. C. Ballentine, therefore:
Resolved, That in the death of Mr. Ballentine his family, friends and neighbors have met with a calamity whose intensity may not be appreciated by society at large; that Frontier county has lost a citizen whose death will send sorrow into the hearts of all her citizens, and will be intensely deplored by all his friends and acquaintances.
Resolved, That the Hon. D. C. Ballentine had our warm resepect and esteem in life, and it is our sad privilege which mingles gladness with our sorrow, to bear testimony to his amiable and manly qualities as a man, a friend, a husband and a father, and his integrity and ability as a state senator.
Resolved, That as a member of a convention representing the 30th senatorial district of the state, we hereby express our deep and heartfelt sorrow at the death of Mr. Ballentine; at his being cut down in the prime of manhood and usefulness, and tender our sincere sympathy and condolence to his bereaved wife, children and friends.
Resolved, That these resolutions be forwarded for publication to the various newspapers in his senatorial district, and that a copy of the same be forwarded to the bereaved wife and relatives of the deceased. R. H. Criswell, Ch'man.
